Taking It To The Edge
For the 600LT it’s simple. A focus on pure driving exhilaration. Nothing more. From the top-exit exhausts to the race car-inspired carbon fibre bodywork, we have pushed the boundaries to set a new sportscar benchmark.
Inspired by the renowned 675LT and its iconic ‘Longtail’ racing predecessor, the 600LT is the most extreme incarnation of the McLaren Sports Series. One built to excel on roads and race circuits, to take driver engagement and excitement to the absolute maximum. The aggressive appearance of the 600LT is a function of its track-focused intent. It sits closer to the ground because the 8mm reduction in ride height improves body control and enhances low-speed agility and high-speed stability.
The front wheels are further outboard because the 10mm wider front track imbues the 600LT with the front-end responsiveness expected of a ‘Longtail’. Even the discreet carbon fibre Aero Winglets just behind the front wheels – and akin to those on the P1™ – work together with the carbon fibre side skirts running down each flank to enhance aerodynamic efficiency.
The new carbon fibre bodywork of the 600LT extends both its front and rear dimensions to increase downforce levels. The aggressive carbon fibre front splitter is the first crucial point at which the air interacts with the incredibly powerful fixed aerodynamic package. The airflow is separated, directed and worked around, over, under and even through the sculpted ‘shrink-wrapped’ bodywork. The rear of the 600LT has been extended by 47mm to improve vehicle downforce. This elongated tail also allows the new fixed rear wing to be mounted further back for optimal aerodynamic efficiency.
Directly behind the front splitter is a new carbon fibre floor. Not only lighter and stiffer, it features subtle blades to generate downforce. And set within this flat floor are two new intakes. They channel additional cooling air onto the front brakes, to meet the higher braking loads generated by the increased speeds and performance of the 600LT. The exact shape of the intakes has been carefully tuned to not direct excess airflow into the front wheelarches. This reduces air pressure in the wheelarches, and minimises the flow of turbulent or ‘dirty’ air along the sides of the vehicle. Vehicle drag is cut, and powertrain cooling is improved.
The McLaren 600LT is the most powerful Sports Series ever created, producing 600PS and 620Nm from its twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8. The engine features dry sump lubrication that allows for higher cornering speeds without oil surge. A race-inspired flat-plane crankshaft enables the V8 to be mounted as low as possible to improve agility and handling. The powertrain breathes more freely due to enlarged side air intakes and reduced back pressure from an exhaust system that is even shorter and more extreme than that of the McLaren Senna. The result is an incredible engine that responds instantly to your every input.
Delivering power from the mid-mounted engine to the rear wheels is a dual-clutch, seamless-shift seven-speed gearbox. Using technology developed for the 675LT – and adopted from Formula 1 – the 600LT uses Ignition Cut in Sport mode. A momentary cut of the ignition spark during a gearshift creates a faster change. And each upshift or downshift is accompanied by the same dramatic aural ‘crack’ first experienced on the 675LT. In Track mode optimal gearshift performance is achieved through our Inertia Push technology. The 600LT-specific launch-control function delivers astonishing straight-line performance: acceleration from 0-100km/h (0-62mph) is delivered in just 2.9 seconds.
