Aston Martin History: A Brief Timeline
Today’s new Aston Martin lineup looks very different than the first cars to have come from the brand. Let’s look back at their rich history, starting with the brand’s founding in 1913.
1913-1939: The Early Aston Martin Years
Aston Martin was founded in 1913 by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford, two men underwhelmed by what London’s car market had to offer. In their frustration, they set out to make their own car.
The first Aston Martin, known as the Coal Scuttle, was not much to see: a basic, functional body powered by a redesigned engine from another manufacturer and fitted over a chassis designed by the two business partners. The car was built in 1914 — right in time for World War I. Only after the war did the men have a chance to put their creation to the test and, thanks to the racing success of the Coal Scuttle, grow their business.
The 1920s and 1930s saw the company produce race-winning cars of increasingly complex design and engineering. By this point Martin and Bamford had left the business; it was the new owners who bought their company in 1927 that renamed it Aston Martin. Once WWII came to an end, it was time for a new era of Aston Martin supercars.
The Postwar Years: Legends Are Born
After the war, the company was sold to wealthy industrialist David Brown. Under his tenure, the 1948 Aston Martin DB1 is born — the original of the brand’s now-iconic DB Series.
The world quickly got to know the winsome, stylish DB Series over the years, but the 1963 DB5 was truly a turning a point — it was, after all, the car that quickly became immortalized in the James Bond film Goldfinger. To this day the car remains a cultural icon that’s symbolic of all the impossibly debonair, elegant cars to ever have worn the Aston Martin logo.
Since the 1960s, Aston Martin models have grown ever faster and more sophisticated. Noteworthy models like the 1990sDB7 — the car that became the blueprint for today’s Aston Martin coupes — and the 2020s DBX707 — the brand’s first-ever SUV — prove that innovation has always been at the heart of what Aston Martin represents.
